Beautiful Burning Bush Tree

A few years back we were lamenting the lack of red color in our yard. We had planted a dwarf maple that promised to deliver vibrant red color, only to find out that the vibrant red promised color was a sickly yellow due to the nature of the soil in our yard.

We spoke to an arborist who suggested a burning bush tree. The bush is grafted onto a tree trunk and makes for a truly spectacular fall display of color. The tree is only a few years old, but is supposed to grow to around 12 feet tall at maturity.

The leaves don't stick around too long, but it is such a nice pop of color that I just had to post about it.

Ali is back in town!

Today we got to see Lou's granddaughter, Ali, at a Packer Party hosted by her dad and step-mom.

Ali got married last August and moved to Nebraska, so we don't get much chance to spend time with her. It was so good to see her again. She is a fine young person with a good head on her shoulders.

The house was filled with Packer fans, so yelling and screaming at the TV, as well as lots of eating was the main event.

Ali had been out with friends the night before, so she found a quite place in the house to take a nap.

Have a great visit Ali, and we will see you at Christmas.

Cute Cheesehead Girl!

Congratulations David and Rachel!

This year my nephew, David, and his girlfriend, Rachel, got engaged.

We all knew it was just a matter of time as these two are perfect together.

The big day is set for July 23rd of next year.

We are looking forward to this special day!

Best wishes for a great wedding day!

What a cute couple!

Happy Birthday: Laura, Linda and Adam

Saturday night, we celebrated my twin sister's birthday and my nephew's birthday.

Linda, Adam and Laura all born in October
Adam turned a young 34 this year and the sisters turned a year older than they were last year (haha).

I actually forgot how old I really am!
Laura made the dinner; Linda brought the cake; I brought the wine; and we all had a good time.

I also forgot how old I really am!
Even the dogs dressed for the occasion.

The highlight of the evening was having mom learn to say "carmel macchiato" so she could order it at Starbucks. It was quite comical as each attempt started with "mac" but never quite made it to "macchiato." Needless to say that after she asked if the drink was Polish, we roared!

Happy Birthday Laura, Linda and Adam.

Vacation to Prairie Du Chien and Northeast Iowa

We recently experienced the beauty of the Mississippi River as we vacationed in Prairie Du Chien and toured neighboring areas in Iowa.

One of the first things we did was to visit Effigy Mounds National Monument. The monument contains 2,526 acres with 206 mounds of which 31 are animal effigies ( shapes of animals).

The area is sacred because the mounds contain the bones of the Native Americans who were buried there. There are many different shaped mounds: conical, linear, compound and the animal effigies.

The views at Pike's Peak State Park were incredible. This state park is located on the highest bluff of the Mississippi River. It is interesting to note that Zebulon Pike actually discovered this area before the more famous Pike's Peak in Colorado.

We had been wanting to tour the Mississippi River for quite some time and got our chance on this vacation. We took the Mississippi River Explorer Wildlife Cruise and got to see the "off the beaten path" areas along the Mississippi. We saw Bald Eagles, beaver lodges, muskrat areas, turtles and awesome beauty.

Our captain and first mate had made many trips down the river and were a wealth of knowledge of the history of the river and surrounding areas.

We also visited the estate of one of Wisconsin's most prosperous families. The Villa Louis was the country home of the Dousman family. Hercules Dousman grew up on Mackinac Island and became wealthy due to his experience with fur trading and later lumber and railroads. His son, Louis, led the re-building of the residence in 1872.

12 foot entry doors at Villa Louis
The villa did not allow inside pictures to be taken, but each room had beautiful hand painted wall paper, 10 foot book cases and wardrobes, electric and oil lighting, bronze busts of the owners, and a table setting that included 5 glasses for each person: a  water glass, white and red wine glass, a cordial glass, and some other beverage glass.

The villa is now owned by the Wisconsin Historical Society and guided tours are given daily.

The rich history of the area was captured at Fort Crawford at Prairie Du Chien. The Fort was built in 1816 and was one of five forts stretching from Rock Island to Green Bay. The purpose of the fort was to project a presence and power of the United States to the Native American residents to maintain order on the frontier.

Fort Crawford Hospital, Prairie Du Chien
The hospital wing of the fort is all that is left and was restored in the 1930s. This museum offered a glimpse into life where operations without anesthesia was common, and medical instruments were somewhat crude by today's standards.

We also tried our hand at gambling at the Lady Luck Riverboat Casino. This was a unique experience as we had to walk through a long walkway to reach the casino on the river. We played a few penny machines and won a bit!

Of course, we ate at some fun restaurants, shopped the down towns in some of the neighboring communities, did a wine tasting at a local winery and antiqued! We had a great time.

Great White Hunter

This is going to taste good!
Today my nephew, Ed, got his first 5 point buck. Ed is a natural-born hunter and nailed this buck in one shot!

Dad and boys are skinning the buck and then dad will take Tony out to see if he can beat his brother.

Great job, Ed!

Hope you get some great steaks, burgers, and sausage out of this one.
